Honor Court
Mission:
The mission statement for Student Honor Court should speak for itself, maintaining
academic integrity at the University of Florida is of utmost importance.
Recent years past, the Honor Code was voted on and approved by 79% of the student
population. The Honor Code was then implemented into the university system and professors
are using it on course syllabi and tests to remind the student of academic integrity.
The student has a right to be heard in Student Honor Court confidentially and is
heard and judged by random students that are called upon to serve as jurors in trial.
The professor can call the office and request proctors of whom go to the test site
and make sure all eyes are on their own papers. This office works with students
as well as faculty for the sole purpose of upholding academic integrity at
the University of Florida.
Purpose:
The Honor Court is one avenue that is open to all undergraduate students who have
been charged with an academic dishonesty violation. It is a student-run organization
that consists of law students who serve as Attorney General and Defense Counsel.
The Defense Counsel represents the accused student and the Attorney General ensures
that the student is properly tried in order to uphold academic integrity. Both sides
present a case to a panel of your peers who then determine whether or not the accused
student is responsible for the charge. Then the panel recommends the appropriate
punishment. Finally, the Dean of Student’s Office reviews the recommendation and
makes the ultimate decision.
Goals:
In addition to functioning as a hearing forum, the Honor Court also strives to remind
and educate the student body about the existence of the Honor Code, the academic
honesty guidelines, and their real importance.
